Work Permit
What is a work permit?
It is an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) that proves to employers that a foreign national can be hired to work in the United States.
How is the work permit process?
Once a foreign national has an immigration status that allows him or her to work, he or she can apply for a work authorization card called an Employment Authorization Document. This authorization is obtained by filing the appropriate form with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
If the application is approved, the EAD is mailed to the applicant. You can then present this document to your employer as proof that you are authorized to work in the United States. This authorization allows you to work legally for the period of time it is valid.
Who can apply?
Any foreign national with immigration status or temporary permission to stay in the United States.
Types of work permits
USCIS issues the following types of EADs:
- Initial EAD: This document certifies that you are authorized to work in the United States.
- Renewal EAD: This document renews your original EAD. Generally, you should apply for a renewal EAD no more than 180 days before your original EAD expires.
- Replacement EAD: This document replaces an EAD that has been lost, mutilated, or stolen. A replacement EAD also replaces an EAD that was issued with incorrect information, such as a misspelled name.
Work permit benefits
The EAD demonstrates to employers that the individual can be hired to work in the U.S., bringing the benefits of stability and personal, family, and community growth.
